The breeding of Nyssa and Phantom will be repeated one more time due to the success of the first litter and because of the potential genetic contribution of these pups to the breed.

Reasons for this breeding.

This match was initially selected and approved for several reasons. Nyssa has good conformation with superb movement. Her only conformation faults are slight east-west front, smaller size, and somewhat snipey head. She has beautiful coat, nice angulation, beautiful side and rear movement, full dentition, and very lovely expression. Overall, she is very typey and sound girl. Nyssa also has a temperament of a true working shepherd. She is very smart, willing worker, wonderful with people and dogs, yet protective, and very devoted. She also possess nice drives. Her wonderful personality made her so many human and dog friends as well. She can take credit for getting Canine Good Citizen certificate at 5.5 months, CD, USDAA agility leg, and she is my certified search and rescue canine partner.

She has been extensively tested to assure her health before breeding. Nyssa is OFA good at 30 months, PennHIP .37/.37 at 30 months, OFA elbows normal,  OFA cardiac clearance, annual thyroid clearance, annual CERF eye clearance, normal EPI test and ECG as well as extensive bloodwork. I have purposely waited for Nyssa to be over 3 years old before having a first litter. This gave her time to mature physically and mentally, prove her wonderful working temperament, and it also gave me time to assess her strengths and weaknesses as well as any late health developing problems.

Phantom matches Nyssa perfectly. He is not tall himself but he is very solid with super bone, very nice head, solid topline, super movement, and the best looking tail I have seen. He exudes confidence and has an unbeatable temperament and presence. He passes his awesome temperament, increased size, very rich pigment, excellent movement, and that special aura to his puppies. He also has solid hips and is producing them in his offspring.

What we expected from the breeding.

This litter was expected to have wonderful, confident personalities with working temperaments, good size, proper heads, very solid hips and health, full dentition, and beautiful movement. Their working abilities should be a great contribution to the gene pool since this is one the traits we seem to be loosing.

The pups will also carry rare Tessa/Bear bloodlines on sire's side and will be non-MAW. This litter should blend well with MAW dogs, Captain/Lizzy, and Trinka/Shep progeny. RC for this offspring is very low 26% (based on 7 full generations, 96% of 8th gen., 89% of 9th gen., 20 partial generations), IC and kinship coefficients are 15.5%, mating coefficient is 9.5% (based on the above data). This will help to broaden the gene pool and introduce new bloodlines that are very compatible with the existing ones.  And Shep only appears once in the pups’ pedigree.

Report on the first litter at 9.5 months.

Most of the expected came true. They are very sturdy, confident and outgoing puppies.

Virtues:

These pups have unbeatable temperaments. Only one pup was people shy and with a trainer help and owner’s involvement, she is just as outgoing and friendly as the others are. They all are very confident, outgoing, curious pups with great ball drives. Their working qualities are apparent. All of them are very athletic, the three involved in agility are fearless, fast, and easy to work with. The search and rescue pups are also doing very well. The one boy with the most training has an unbelievable drive and focus and is progressing very rapidly in his training. Another girl excels in tracking.

With maybe the exception of the two smaller girls that look more like Nyssa all the pups have incredible bone. They have some of the nicest chests that I have seen in a long time. All of them are great movers, very agile and athletic. Both the dual and the sable pups have very rich pigment and wonderful, proper coats; the sables are especially richly marked and they also carry the bi-black allele. They are nice size, ranging from 70+lbs for the smaller girls up almost 90lbs for the boys. They should all reach the minimum standard height and weight easily and then and some.

Most of them also have beautiful heads with dark pigment, strong, short muzzles and excellent lower jaws. Their skulls are nice and broad as the standard calls for. Their eye color ranges from dark brown to yellow. All pups seem to have all their teeth.

Faults:

All of the pups are somewhat lacking stops. This is something that can still change as the pups continue maturing. At this stage some of them are short in the leg. Again, this might be a subject to change. In addition, they did not completely inherit Phantom’s beautiful saber tail but their tail carriage is still better than the norm for most Shilohs.

Overall, this is a very vigorous litter with outstanding temperaments, great conformation, and very unique bloodlines.
